Under Arm Sweating

Under arm sweating is an embarrassing condition that affects everyone.  Axillary hyperhidrosis, is the medical term for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the armpits (axillary) and effects between one and three per cent of the population worldwide.  For the most part, it is deemed as a social faux pas to be in public with sweaty armpits, unless a person is:

  • On holiday somewhere extremely hot
  • At the gym or otherwise exercising
  • In a sauna or steam room

To be honest though, even if on holiday or exercising, a person is expected to take measures to ensure that the sweat is at least controlled slightly.

For those that suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis, none of the above situations need to be experienced for them to begin to sweat profusely.  In fact, people with this excessive sweat condition can sweat in a cold room for apparently no reason at all.  In these situations, they can often be quite helpless against the sudden attack of sweat patches under the arms.

How to Alleviate Under Arm Sweating

 

As with all things, public demand results in a plethora of answers.  There are a number of products, surgical procedures and natural remedies aimed to combat excessive under arm sweating.

Natural remedies – The best natural remedy is to lead a healthy lifestyle.  Eating foods which cleanse the system that don’t contain toxins mean the body will have less harmful substances to sweat out.  Also, keeping to a healthy weight helps the body to regulate its temperature.

One method which many people find effective is to mix small amounts of baking soda together with lemon juice and apply to the armpits.  It is thought that the astringency of the lemon juice works with the baking soda to dry out the area and reduce sweat levels.

Under Arm SweatingProducts – There are a number of products on the market today aimed specifically at helping people who experience excessive sweating.

  • Prescription antiperspirant – Stronger than the average antiperspirant, these super charged sweat fighters contain a higher volume of the active ingredient found within most antiperspirants, making them more powerful and longer lasting to meet the needs of those suffering with axillary hyperhidrosis.
  • Sweat resistant clothing – Clothing with underarm protection that fight to keep armpits clear and dry.  Worn underneath normal clothes to ensure no sweat patches appear when they are least needed.
  • Sweat pads/shields – Different variations are available, some sticking to the skin beneath the arms itself, whilst others are stuck to the clothing.  All designs are used to stop the area from sweating and soaking up any sweat that does appear so as not to leave the unsightly stains on the clothing.

Medical/surgical procedures – Procedures of this kind are usually reserved for people who have tried all of the above options and more besides.  They can be expensive, and in some cases are not guaranteed to work or carry side-effects.

  • Botox injections – Injections slow the production of sweat by the glands illuminating the excessive part of excessive sweating, making the sweat much easier to control.  Unfortunately the effects don’t last forever and if a patient requires a more permanent solution this will either be extremely expensive or not the right choice.
  • Iontophoresis – A low volt chemical charge is passed through water that covers the area.  This interferes with the signals being sent to the sweat glands which tell them to sweat.  By doing this, the amount of sweat is controlled at its source and easier for the patient to manage.  This is becoming increasingly popular, with machines being available for unsupervised use in the home.
  • Surgery – Surgery involves the nerve endings which send the signals to the sweat glands and regulate sweat being burned.  This is extremely effective, but can have the unfortunate side-effect of making other areas of the body sweat even more by way of compensation.

In all honesty, most people will find respite by combining natural remedies with clinically proven products.  The problem is as individual as the person who suffers from it and, as such, excessive under arm sweating is treatable through a largely trial and error basis.
