Causes

Hyperhidrosis is the name given to excessive sweating.  There are three types of the condition with the first two types being localized to specific areas of the body and the third being generalized, causing all over body excessive sweating.  Those who complain of excessive head sweating will suffer from primary focal hyperhidrosis and secondary focal hyperhidrosis.

Primary hyperhidrosis sufferers sweat profusely in certain places around the body such as:

  • Head and face
  • Armpits
  • Palms of hands
  • Soles of feet

The causes of this type of excessive sweating are largely unknown, however there are known triggers which can exacerbate the situation such as caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods.

Secondary hyperhidrosis affects sufferers in the same way as primary hyperhidrosis.  However, the secondary form normally has underlying causes such as medical conditions.

Treatment

If a person experiences any sudden changes in the amount that they are sweating, it is important to determine the cause of this to see if there is indeed an underlying health issue.  Some causes of secondary hyperhidrosis are:

  • Obesity
  • Medications
  • Alcohol and drug misuse
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes

These causes will normally be accompanied by other symptoms and if that is the case, a doctor should be consulted as there may be a short term solution to manage the sweating, but if it is a symptom of a more serious problem, treatment of the cause should be carried out to cure the sweating.

For primary hyperhidrosis which is known to be idiopathic (no known cause), management is really the only option.  People who suffer from this condition may sweat profusely from different parts off the body at all times, not simply when it is hot or if they are physically exerting themselves which is of course when everybody sweats.

Although there is no miracle cure to stop excessive sweating, there are steps which can be taken to for sufferers to regain some kind of control on the matter in order to feel that they can lead a normal life without the fear of feeling self-conscious with sweat dripping down their faces in public.

Antiseptic wipes – For those who can’t stand the thought of needles or the expense of the botox injections, certain antiseptic wipes such as SweatBlock may be the answer.  The wipes work in much the same way as antiperspirants, yet they can be wiped over the forehead and around the face in a way which commands less attention than spraying antiperspirant over the head (gaining more attention and causing more embarrassment, not to mention the risk of getting some in the eyes).
