What Should You Know About Night Sweating?

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night drenched and wondering where on earth the leak in your roof came from? Only, you would find that you were drenched not in rain but in your own sweat, and nothing you did to help control this problem of night sweating would have any effect.

This is not an unnatural occurrence. Many people – adults and children alike – go through this problem. In most cases it is nothing more than an overactive system, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Night sweating, especially excessive night sweating could be a symptom for a medical condition of which you are unaware.

Of course, some people just experience bouts of night sweating if they have ingested hot or spicy foods before coming to bed. And since prevention is always better than cure, the best thing that can be done in these circumstances is to avoid such foods that you know will trigger an attack of night sweating.

Some people on the other hand, experience night sweating as part of their normal biological functions. It is also not uncommon for these people to have only intermittent bouts of night sweating. It is not necessary for these people to suffer from regular bouts of nightly sweating. It can even be triggered by a number of factors other than that of food.

For the most part these include such things as excessive stress, anxiety, and to a very great extent, the prevailing weather conditions. Some people will have bouts of night sweating even in the thickest of winter, but then again, that isn’t so strange as most people will have not only the heating turned on, but also thick blankets covering them to ward off the chill!

As you can see, especially in a person prone to night sweating, these factors can all lead to that person sweating excessively in the night. This does not however, mean that night sweating is experienced by a vast majority of people. Indeed, relatively speaking, the number of people who suffer from night sweating is low, but on the flip side of the coin this number is by no means very low..

If you suffer from night sweating and have tried everything you can think of to stop or even control this problem, you might want to consult with your physician to see what your options are. No one wants to contend with sweaty sheets and nightclothes, day after day, or rather night after night!

You can also try using antiperspirants in the night time to help you control any night sweating problems. Or you could try changing your overall diet as well. It might not be just one food which is the problem, but your entire diet. On the other hand, you can also try relaxation methods just before you go to bed to help you relax. These can all have a beneficial effect on you and might be able to help you prevent night sweating.

Anxiety Sweating is a Problem That Can Have a Vastly Negative Impact on You

Sweating of any kind can have a detrimental effect on a person’s moral, and this can be especially true of anxiety sweating. It is true that most any type of excessive sweating can be harmful emotionally to many a person, so what makes anxiety sweating any different?

After all, you still sweat, and in most cases excessively, and you still have to deal with the modern social stigma associated with this natural bodily function. Why then single out anxiety sweating as a problem that can have a vastly negative impact on you? Why not turn instead to night sweating, or excessive sweating due to a health issue, or indeed to any type of excessive sweating?

Because anxiety sweating, unlike the other types of sweating can lead to cyclic anxiety sweating. Or in other words, for the person who tends to sweat excessively when suffering from bouts of anxiety, they will find that their anxiety can become more pronounced as a reaction to their sweating, which in turn can increase their sweating.

This is not always the case, of course, and a person who suffers from anxiety attacks need not feel the burden that anxiety sweating might bring down upon them, but it does frequently happen in this way.

They will feel the social stigma a hard cross to bear indeed when having to deal with not only anxiety sweating, but also when having to deal with the implications and associations of having an anxiety attack as well.

Unfortunately there can however, also be associated with such treatments, a stigma all on its own. The world as we know it today is a baffling place and the very things that we need, to deal with and control a problem, or condition, we suffer from can be derided just as much as the problem itself.

For most people who suffer from anxiety sweating, there is little to no relief from their burdens to be found in the everyday treatments that we take for granted, and which are the accepted norms of society.

Regular antiperspirants won’t work most of the time, and some people will resort to more drastic methods such as surgery to help them curb or control their anxiety sweating. A person suffering from anxiety sweating might find that therapy is a good alternative treatment or even a part of the physical treatment aspect.

Therapy can, and has, helped many people deal with their anxiety issues, and sometimes just learning how to deal with these situations when you are suddenly overcome by an anxiety attack can help to reduce your anxiety sweating problems. And in the end that’s all that you want.

Sweating During Sleep

Sweating during sleep causes many people to worry. Should you be staying awake at night worrying over your sweat?

If you sweat while you sleep, the chances are you are perfectly normal. We all sweat for different reasons, ranging from heavy pajamas to hormonal changes to serious medical problems. In many cases, you don’t even notice that you do sweat.

Sweating is the body’s way of cooling itself off. If you find yourself sweating during sleep, there are many easy ways to solve the problem.

First of all wear lighter pajamas and use lighter bed linens. Be sure to use natural fibers such as cotton because synthetic fabrics don’t allow your skin to breathe properly.

Next be sure your room is cool enough. Open a window or use a fan or air conditioner to bring the room temperature to a comfortable level.

Before you turn in, try taking a cool shower or drinking a glass of water. These will help bring your body temperature down to help you get a good night’s sleep. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine as they can raise body temperature.

If you find yourself sweating during sleep despite these efforts, consider what could be causing the problem. Are you particularly worried about something? Your anxiety could be causing you to perspire.  Are you taking any medications? Check to see if night sweats could be a side effect.

Sweating during sleep can be quite common during two phases of life: adolescence and menopause/andropause (the so-called “change” from the reproductive years for both women and men). At these times of life, your body’s hormone levels change, resulting in changes in body temperature and other changes.  While hormone replacement therapy can help cure night sweating, many choose to just ride out the process, which gradually resolves itself.

If you are fighting off the flu or some other infection, sweating during sleep can be your body’s way of healing itself. However, night sweats can also be an indication of more serious health problems, including sleep apnea, meningitis, tuberculosis, diabetes and HIV. If you are really concerned and have ruled out the more benign causes, it is well worth a trip to the doctor to rule out the more serious causes as well.

Sweating during the night can be an annoying problem. While most often the cause is nothing to worry about don’t wait to have it checked out.  This is one case in which it pays to “sweat the small stuff”.

Night Sweats in Men: Is This a Cause for Concern?

Night sweats in men is a subject that is receiving increasing attention in the medical community. If you sweat at night, should you be concerned?

Probably not. Medical experts are becoming increasingly convinced that men experience andropause the same way women experience menopause. Just as women experience hot flushes and night sweats because of the fluctuations in their hormone levels, so men also experience night sweats as their bodies adjust their levels of testosterone and other male hormones. The problem resolves itself over time, just as it does for women.

If you are a man in your late forties or older and you find yourself sweating increasingly at night, simply use lighter pajamas and bed linens and/or open a window to cool off. The problem should resolve itself over time.

In addition, it would be a good idea to limit your caffeine intake and your alcohol consumption as both of these can affect how much you sweat, particularly at night. Instead, take a cool shower and drink some water before you turn in for the night. But don’t drink too much water or you will end up getting up at night anyway.

However, there may be cases when night sweating in men can indicate a more severe medical problem. If you sweat so much that you have to change your bedding or your pajamas during the night, you should see a doctor to rule out another potential problem.

For example, night sweating in men can be a sign of tuberculosis, cancer, diabetes or HIV. Your doctor will probably request a battery of tests to rule out these serious problems. It can also be a sign of sleep apnea, a condition in which you temporarily stop breathing while you sleep. Night sweating is one of your body’s defenses in such a case.

While you await the results of the testing your doctor will require, try not to worry. Night sweats in men can also be an indication of a more benign problem. For example, if you are worried about something or are taking a new medication, you may find yourself sweating more, particularly at night. Your body may also be fighting off a minor infection, such as the flu and your night sweating will resolve as your body recovers.

Night sweating in men can be a sign of a more serious problem or it may be simply a sign of the aging process. If you are concerned, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. The sooner you do, the better you will sleep.
