Stop Sweat

Sweat is the body’s natural defense system to prevent us from becoming overheated, which could lead to serious consequences.  For one or two per cent of people though, there is some kind of malfunction in the nervous system and the sweat glands receive messages to produce sweat at all times, even when it is not necessary.  This problem can be extremely embarrassing for sufferers, but fortunately there are ways to stop sweat from controlling the lives of those with hyperhidrosis.

Most people who suffer from hyperhidrosis will sweat profusely in any of the following places, whilst the rest of the body sweats at a normal rate:

  • Head and face
  • Armpits
  • Soles of feet
  • Palms of hands

Profuse sweating can be uncomfortable and, for those who sweat in the most obvious places such as the hands, head, face and armpits, the problem can cause embarrassment to a point where the person avoids any kind of situation which could trigger a bout of sweating.  As the condition needs no specific trigger, but is exacerbated by nervousness and anxiety, this can often mean that sufferers will avoid any public gathering with strangers who do not know and understand their condition.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t leave many options.

Since this kind of hyperhidrosis (known as primary focal hyperhidrosis) doesn’t have any known cause, there is no cure, miraculous or other.  However, there are many different ways by which a person can manage the condition.  Obviously different areas of the body may require different approaches, but hyperhidrosis is recognized worldwide and as such, there is a plethora of solutions to the problem.

Head and face

Experts say that head sweating is often related to dehydration.  Therefore the best tip to keep head sweating to a minimum would be to drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day.  There are many other natural methods and remedies which are reported to help with such sweating such as maintaining a balanced diet.

For those who prefer to rely on products to solve the problem, antiperspirant wipes are proving to be extremely popular.  The wipes are extremely handy and can be used without any fuss or embarrassment to keep the face from sweating throughout the day.

Armpits

The most obvious solution is antiperspirant.  Most sufferers may be skeptical about this suggestion as many will have tried a number of the strongest antiperspirants in the shops without any particular success.  The secret is: prescription antiperspirants.  These super strength antiperspirants contain even more of the active ingredients which combat sweat.

It is important to remember that antiperspirants control the amount of sweat being produced, whereas deodorants are there to keep any nasty odors associated with sweat at bay.  Confusing the two will not help the situation at all.

Feet

Prescription antiperspirant is another great tool here, but before a trip to the doctors there are some other methods which may work:

  • Talcum powder – Apply a light dusting of the powder to freshly washed, dry feet.  This will act to absorb the moisture as well as going some way to preventing any odor issues.
  • Sweat absorbing pads – There are a number of pads on the market which can be placed inside the shoe to absorb any moisture, like the talcum powder.

Hands

Again there are a number of natural remedies to treat sweaty palms and prevent the dreaded cold and clammy handshake from ever happening.  There are also a number of creams and balms available from chemists which act to reduce sweat produced in the hands.

Tried and failed?

If all the natural and over the counter products have been exhausted without any relief, there are more extreme measures which can be taken to stop sweating.  Botox injections are a popular but expensive method, being extremely effective but not permanent. Iontophoresis machines are also available to have at home now.  The machines interrupt the signals being sent to the sweat glands, solving the problem at its very core, although doctors claim that this method will only be successful for around 70% of people.

Note

Although excessive sweating is not a danger in itself, it can be a symptom of a more serious underlying medical condition.  Therefore, to stop sweat effectively, the reasons behind it must be deciphered.
