Night Sweats in Men: Is This a Cause for Concern?

Are you a man that sweats excessively during the night? If so, the following article will hopefully point you in the right direction insofar as reasons and solutions are concerned.

Night sweats in men are not as uncommon as people may think.  There are a number of medical problems which may cause night sweats, although, for the most part, the problem will simply be down to a hormonal imbalance or a specific life-style.

Andropause

Also known as “male menopause,” Andropause is controversial in the medical world with many professionals maintaining the opinion that there is no such condition.  However, recent research has shown more evidence to the contrary and there are many doctors and medical professionals who are fully behind the idea of Andropause and how it can affect men.

Andropause is not clearly defined, yet common symptoms that are associated with the condition are:

  • Loss of libido
  • Hot flashes
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Impaired memory
  • Decrease in concentration levels
  • Anxiety and/or stress
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue

These symptoms may be brought about by a low testosterone level within the body.  The hormone is vital to many of the body’s natural functions.  In men, testosterone levels naturally decrease over the years, so the change is not as sudden as a woman’s menopause.  In fact men do not lose the ability to reproduce at all, which is cause for more concern amongst the medical professionals with some believing that the term male menopause is misleading and incorrect.

It is the imbalance in the hormones that affects the body temperature.  As the body temperature drops, the covers that were keeping a person warm at the beginning of the night are now feeling incredibly hot.  This is when the sweating ensues.

Lifestyle

  • Raised stress levels about anything in life may be the cause of or add to the situation.
  • Eating spicy foods or consuming alcoholic beverages close to bed time may also encourage men to sweat during the night and wake up uncomfortable.
  • Obesity and rapid weight gain will also play havoc with the body’s temperature whilst asleep.

Environmental

Waking with night sweats could be due to simple problems such as:

  • Hot room
  • Surplus covers to requirement
  • Covers are too thick
  • Pajamas’ too thick

Treatments

Obviously, with so many different causes there are different solutions and ways in which to manage the situation.

  1. Firstly with Andropause, if a positive diagnosis is made, some doctors will most likely suggest hormone replacement therapy in order to try and restore the balances in hormones.  This will also help with any other symptoms related to the condition.
  2. A great way to help prevent the interrupted sleep pattern that arises from night sweats is to try and lead a healthy, active lifestyle.  Many men find taking a walk or some form of light exercise shortly before going to bed to be beneficial.  Not only is the exercise good for the heart, but walking or Yoga is the perfect way to relieve any stress or tension that may have built up during the day.
  3. The body flushes itself of toxins by releasing them through sweat.  Therefore, the fewer toxins consumed in food and drink, the less the body will feel the need to get rid of.  If the man changes his diet quite drastically from fairly poor choices in food to good ones, the sweat levels may even increase at first s the body tries to flush out all the toxins.  However, after continuation for a short period of time, positive improvement should be seen.
  4. Lastly, environmental factors simply take a few adaptations to make them manageable.  Swapping a single layer thick cover such as a duvet, for layers of thinner sheets and blankets will mean it is easier to cool down through the night by removing layers.  Also using breathable materials such as natural fibers will also allow any hot air to escape instead of being trapped like a sauna.

If there is any doubt as to why night sweats in men may be occurring, or there are any other symptoms in conjunction with the sweating, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
