Is Underarm Sweat Stopping Your Life? 5 Tips to Fight Back!
Underarm sweat issues getting you down? This article will hopefully point you in the right direction when it comes to finding solutions to alleviate the problem.
Underarm sweat or sweating of the armpits is something that everyone can relate to. It is completely natural and, in fact, necessary to sweat. Why? Because sweating is the body’s natural way of regulating its temperature; in the heat of a sunny day, during exercise or through feelings of nervousness and anxiety. Without the ability to sweat under these conditions, we would suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Why does sweat occur under the armpits?
There are sweat glands beneath the surface of everybody’s skin. These sweat glands are located all over the body but there are a concentrated number in certain areas, which include the armpits as well as:
- Head – including face and scalp
- Palms of hands
- Soles of feet
Most people sweat evenly, all over the body in moderation. However, for an unfortunate, select few, excessive sweating under the arms (known as axillary hyperhidrosis) can occur even without any of the normal triggers which may cause sweating. In situations that raise the temperature of the body, those who suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis will often complain of dripping wet arm pits. Whilst this is by no means a life threatening condition, constantly worrying about underarm sweat can wreak havoc on a person’s social life. Many sufferers find the condition highly embarrassing with a negative stigma attached to them that they are somehow less hygienic than the next person, which is, of course, not relative to the condition at all.
Tips to control underarm sweat
The following five methods can be beneficial to the management of underarm sweat, whether it is on a more regular level than that of axillary hyperhidrosis or not.
- Antiperspirant – Choosing a good antiperspirant and using it daily is a great component in the fight against sweaty armpits. There is a huge range of over the counter products that will combat most sweat problems. For the 1% of people that suffer from excessive sweating, stronger forms of antiperspirant can be found with a higher level of aluminum compound (the active ingredient). These types of antiperspirants actually react with sweat, so the more there is, the better the sprays or roll-ons work.
- Clothing – Choosing clothing that is made from breathable material such as cotton, silk, wool or linen, to name but a few, will help to keep sweat to a minimum. The weave is not as tight as synthetic materials and air is allowed to circulate more freely. On a similar note, wearing skin-tight clothing will not do any favors for people who suffer from underarm sweat and the tell-tale dark circles are likely to appear quickly in such clothing.
- Healthy diet – Often the best way to prevent or control something which happens on the outside of the body is to look after the inside of the body. Choosing a healthy diet can decrease the effects of sweating beneath the arms. Certain foods and drinks have a habit of stimulating the body into producing sweat. Main culprits of this kind are; caffeine, onions, alcohol and spicy foods such as curries. Cutting these out of the diet or reducing the levels of consumption may make an incredible difference to the amount of sweat produced.
- Exercise – Although this will temporarily increase the production of sweat, the endorphins released during exercise will help to calm any feelings of anxiety or stress which are also top contenders for producing sweat. Regular exercise has been shown to drastically lower blood pressure and stress levels in a person, making them less likely to start sweating about a board meeting.
- Preparation – At times, in certain situations, there is no doubt whatsoever that we will sweat. If it is especially hot outside or if there is some kind of event that is taking place that is bound to make us nervous, then preparation is the key. Mentally preparing for a stressful situation and gaining enough rest beforehand, making sure everything is organized will go a long way to relieve pressure. Carrying some antiperspirant and some wet wipes are also a great way of combating the problem. A quick cleansing action with the wet wipe and a top-up of the antiperspirant should be enough to keep a lid on the underarm sweating. Sometimes, just knowing that these items are on hand can calm people enough to lessen the amount of sweat produced in stressful situations.
