Home Remedies for Excessive Sweating

Before looking for home remedies for excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis as it is medically referred to, it is important to know a few things about the condition itself.

Firstly, there are three types of the condition:

  1. Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis – This is the most common presentation of the condition.  The focal points referred to in the name are the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, armpits and the face.  The excessive sweating in this case is limited to these areas whilst the rest of the body would sweat as normal.
  2. Secondary Focal Hyperhidrosis – This would present itself in the same way as primary focal hyperhidrosis in that the focal points are the only places effected by the excessive sweating.  However, this form of excessive sweating is derived from a clear medical reason such as an illness or injury.
  3. Generalized Hyperhidrosis – The last form of the condition sees the sufferer experiencing excessive sweating all over their body.  As with the secondary form, there will definitely be an underlying medical cause for this type of hyperhidrosis.

Treatments

The most common form of the condition is also the one that is less clear on causes.  Often referred to as idiopathic, meaning unknown cause, nobody is quite sure why people suffer from the condition.  Many people that complain of this type of excessive sweating are known to have very close relatives who have the same problem, so there does seem to be some form of genetic link although professionals still have no idea as to what it might be.

For people suffering from this embarrassing condition, it can present a real problem, at work or when socializing.  There are various treatments including the obvious deodorants and antiperspirants or medication.  However, many choose to try the less expensive home remedies before they try anything else which may prove costly or lead to more embarrassing side-effects.  Many of those who choose this path are pleasantly surprised with the positive results.

Home remedies

Home remedies can be split into two main categories; applicants and dietary.  Applicants are remedies that are applied to the focal areas of the excessive sweating (palms of hands, soles of feet, armpits, face) whereas the dietary remedies can be used to work to combat the problem from the inside out.

  • Dietary #1 – Tomato Juice:  Drinking a full glass of tomato juice in the mornings has been shown to significantly improve the symptoms of hyperhidrosis.  The anti-oxidants in the natural juice are thought to regulate the sweat glands.
  • Dietary #2 – Sage tea: First boil some fresh sage leaves in a pan for no longer than ten minutes.  This is important as boiling the leaves for a longer period of time may release harmful toxins.  Once this step is complete, cool the mixture down with some fresh water ice cubes then drink.  Try to drink this twice a day.  Sage contains Vitamin B Magnesium which is proven to lessen the production of sweat from the glands.  There are forms of magnesium tablets which are often suggested for use by the doctors, so this is a much cheaper way to obtain the same amount of vitamin B with a refreshing drink high in anti-oxidants that is good for the whole body.
  • Dietary #3 – Avoid spicy foods:  As stated before, there are no known causes for primary focal hyperhidrosis and the symptoms can appear without any of the normal prompting.  However, avoiding spicy foods which will raise the body’s core temperature would be a good way to keep from exacerbating the situation.
  • Applicants #1Soak the body in tea:  Boil some tea leaves in a large pan of water.  Once the water is boiled, remove the tea leaves and let the water cool to a temperature comfortable to the touch.  When the correct temperature has been reached, soak the necessary areas with the tea water.  The natural tannic acid in the tea helps to stop the sweating.  This method can be adapted slightly to use sage instead of tea leaves although the same precaution must be taken not to boil the leaves for longer than ten minutes.
  • Applicants #2 – Potato:  Rubbing potato on the affected areas has also been shown to work in some circumstances though the reasons for this are not clear.  Simply cut the potato in half and rub across the area.
  • Applicants #3 – Apple cider Vinegar:  Soak cotton wool ball in the vinegar and dab onto the part of the body that needs help.  The astringent properties of the vinegar serve to dry out the area.

Using home remedies for excessive sweating is often trial and error.  Yet many of the remedies listed use ingredients that are found in some of the medical treatments, so it could well be worth a try before any money is spent in other areas unnecessarily.
