Study Looks at Smell as Well as Sweating

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Here is an article we found in the news archives, so although not current news as such, it still makes fascinating reading.

…A group of scientists studying body odor has discovered that Botulinum toxin A, commonly called Botox, does more than just help stop hyperhidrosis.  It actually can cut down on body odor as well.  The study took sixteen volunteers and gave them a shot of Botox A on one armpit and a 0.9% sodium chloride solution in the other in a double-blind, random selection.  Seven days later, a sniff test was used to determine how smelly each underarm was.  The Botox side was overwhelmingly less smelly, and even on those who did have an odor, testers rated it less unpleasant than the other side.  The study concluded that yes, Botox can not only make you sweat less, it can also make you smell less, too…

Klima Products May Help with Hyperhidrosis

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

While only three percent of the world’s population is affected by hyperhidrosis, for those three percent, the effects are horrible. For these people, finding something, anything, to stop the excessive sweating is a top priority. Unfortunately, many can’t afford surgery or other expensive treatments. For these people, antiperspirants and other products made by Klima may be helpful. The Klima line includes deodorants, hand spray, and foot spray that are aimed specifically at cutting down excessive sweating. In fact, the deodorant is powerful enough to last for up to five days for those who don’t suffer hyperhidrosis. If you can’t afford more expensive treatments, look into Klima products. They may provide the relief you’re looking for.

New Antiperspirant May Help Reduce Excessive Sweating

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

A new antiperspirant featuring aluminum chloride may greatly reduce excessive sweating, according to a new study.  While the study only featured ten patients, all noted that the amount of sweat they experienced decreased by a minimum of 75% after using the new antiperspirant.  The product contains 15% aluminum chloride hexahydrate in two percent salicylic acid gel.  Subjects noted that the product worked on the armpits, feet, and hands.  This new antiperspirant is a great option for those who still experience excessive sweating after botox treatments.  This study follows a previous study done in Canada, which also showed the benefits of antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride.

New Hyperhidrosis Cure Available

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Dr. Farshad Malekmehr, a doctor in Los Angeles, California, has a new surgical procedure that can help anyone who suffers from excessive sweating.  Unlike some treatments, like the new laser treatment, Dr. Malekmehr’s procedure works on all parts of the body.  It’s called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathicotomy, or ETS.  Basically, it interrupts the sympathetic nerves that cause hyperhidrosis.  A titanium clip is actually bound around the nerves to slow down the conduction.  This stops the excessive sweating completely and allows people to live a normal life without the social fears that often accompany hyperhidrosis.

Laser Surgery Now Available for Sweating

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The cosmetic surgeons of the Laser Sweat Ablation service in Britain are now offering a laser operation to stop hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.  All it takes is about an hour and £3,500.  The laser treatment, developed by surgeon Mark Whiteley, actually permanently removes the sweat glands under the arms.  This surgery is more effective than having Botox injections, which only stops excessive sweating temporarily.  This treatment, though, will only help those who suffer from excessive sweating under their arms.  This is because the skin is actually looser there than it is in other areas where many suffer from sweating, including the hands, feet, and the face.

Deodorant Manufacturers Roll Out More Powerful Formulas

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Studies show that the major deodorant manufacturers are selling more deodorant these days, but more than that, they’re selling stronger formulas.  While these products can cost twice as much as standard deodorants, they do help prevent excessive sweating.  These products, like all deodorants, require a bit of sweat to actually work.  When you sweat, you actually draw the deodorant’s active ingredients up into your sweat gland.  Once there, they plug the pores in your skin so you don’t perspire.  These stronger formulas work even better and faster at plugging up the pores, providing better protection from huge sweat stains.

Professionals Seek Botox For Sweating

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

A recent survey shows that flight attendants tend to get more cosmetic surgery done than people in other professionals, but there’s a reason why they may be looking into Botox more than others.  Many opt to have Botox injections in their armpits to stop sweating as much, reducing odors that can be difficult to ignore in enclosed airplanes.  Most said they wanted to keep as clean as possible and continue to look professional even on long flights.  Another group of professionals seeking Botox for anti-sweating purposes is firefighters.  While enduring hot temperatures in their line of work, firefighters want to stay as comfortable as possible, so they seek to cut down on sweating.

Surgery for Excessive Sweating?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

It might sound radical, but there may actually be a surgical cure for hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.  Those who suffer from the embarrassing issue have tried many different cures, but a simple 20 minute procedure might be the true cure.  Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Sympathectomy (VATS) cuts down the amount of sweat someone with hyperhidrosis experiences to a tiny percentage of what it was.  How does it work?  Basically, it’s a minor surgical procedure that cuts the patient’s hyperactive sympathetic nerve chain.  This nerve chain is responsible for stimulating the sweat glands in the armpits and hands.  Some patients (around 15 percent) do end up experiencing what is called compensatory sweating on their chests or backs, but even those who do say it’s not as bad as their previous sweating experiences.
